FIFA 17 is moving to EA’s very own Frostbite engine and this is, in our view, a great move from EA. The ever evolving series needs a great game engine to support all the latest features, but also do it within an efficient and flexible framework that can grow and adapt in the ever-changing and competitive world of games.
Frostbite will be able to push FIFA 17 into a new era because, as the Frostbite website states: “it is much more than just an amazingly powerful and complex piece of software; Frostbite is a design philosophy, a way of thinking and collaborating.” The work they do is truly remarkable and the graphics and gameplay on Star Wars, Battlefront and Battlefield as well as Far Cry is so impressive.
The first generation of Frostbite was designed and built in conjunction with the game Battlefield Bad Company. Based on DICE’s experience with the large scale open world Battlefield series, Frostbite was an ambitious game engine that enabled large scale multi player interactions in dynamic destructible environments.
Frostbite 2 was a complete overhaul of the engine to provide a unified and streamlined software development environment, interactive WYSIWYG editor and run time package. Frostbite 2 enabled and powered the amazing success of Battlefield 3, and set the stage for Gen4.
Frostbite 3 is the logical result of following through on the strategy embarked upon in Frostbite 2 and this is great news for FIFA 17.
The change to Frostbite will hopefully see: better goalkeepers; better referees, with more consistent decisions; more player animations and more realistic game patterns and most importantly, in our opinion, more fluid and immersive gameplay. FIFA 17 SHOULD be a step forward for the series and after FIFA 16 became quite sterile for a lot of unhappy gamers, it will be much needed for the EA team on FIFA.
