What is FIFA Ultimate Team/FUT?
In the simplest terms possible, ultimate team is a football card-collecting mode in Fifa 13. You can use the cards you collect to actually play with against other teams online or offline. You can trade these cards with other online users playing FUT and earn coins by playing games which, can be used to save up for a player you really want to be part of your squad or to start building a squad.
Winning games obviously earns you more coins than a loss would do but for every game you play there will be some reward.
Players are categorised into Bronze, Silver and Gold cards with the classier players being in the gold selection and the lower league players, bronze. Rarer players will have a shiny card and others will just have the colour. Other special cards can be very hard to get hold of but these ‘In-form’ players feature in the team of the week (TOTW). These are released every week based on real-life performances and will see the player having their stats increased just for that card. These in-form (IF) cards can be very costly to buy or if you’re very lucky you’ll get one in a pack. These cards are varied in colour and have a unique look so you’ll easily be able to spot them.
By owning a player card that means you’ll be able to use that footballer in your squad. You can also use any coins you earn to – buy new packs of cards, contracts for players, fitness boosts, morale boosts, position changes and even change your kit, ball, stadium and manager.
FUT 13 is even better this year with the inclusion of a seasons layout so you can compete for trophies and try climb your way through the divisions.
Building team chemistry is very important to you been able to compete in online matches.
A teams chemistry can be as high as 100 and as low as single figures (if you really tried hard!). Obviously you want your team to be as high as possible, the higher the number, the better the players in your team will perform.
Just as in real life if you put 11 players together with 11 different nationalities, from 11 different leagues, in a formation they don’t know AND in their wrong positions they will perform terribly. You will occasionally come across teams that have team chemistry ratings in the range of 50-70 but have a team full of great players from around the world but only very rarely will you see this.
Chemistry increases if you have players (and a manager) who share the following in real life:
- League they are playing in
- Playing in the correct positions
- Team they are playing for
Below we guide you through building your team effectively but following the above steps will see your team chemistry improve dramatically. A player/manager can have a maximum chemistry rating of 9. The better the chemistry between players will show on your squad screen. The brighter the green line the better the chemistry. If your player doesn’t mix well with the player he is linked to you will get an orange line or even worse, a red.
You can change a player’s preferred position and formation with special cards, but they will cost you additional coins.
Building your team effectively
To begin your FUT squad you will start with a base of randomly selected players of low ability.
The first choice you should make before even buying any players is what league or nationality is your team going to built up of. Perhaps it’s a team of Spanish world champions or a strong Premier League outfit. You will find a lot of players build Brazilian based squads as they have a lot of flair and pace. This year we are looking to build a few squads but mainly we’ll be using a Premiership team of primarily players from Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs. The choice is completely yours and it’s down to individual preference. You can build more than one type of squad and rotate who you use but this will be very costly. You have been warned!
Firstly we recommend you choose a formation for your squad that you like to use. The less popular the formation (5-2-2-1) the less player cards with that formation will cost. The more popular (4-1-2-1-2, 4-3-3 or 4-4-2) will see a fairly big increase in price.
After you have done this you can then start to decide which players you will buy. We recommend that you try to pick up players from the lower end of the league you have chosen and buy players in the formation you have chosen as well as, preferably, the same nationality or league played in currently. Endeavour to make sure the players you are bringing into your club share at least two of those first four previously mentioned areas with each other. This will only make your team stronger in the beginning stages.
Play a few games against the computer to build up your coins and get a feel for your squad. Building from the back would be our suggested route with this. Having a decent goalkeeper (who generally cost less than outfield players) will help you to keep clean sheets. Then you want a mixture of pace and strength with good heading ability for your back four and a striker who can take a chance or two.
From this steady base you can then build your team up into a team of world beaters.

Buying player cards for less
The first thing to do is to pick a popular player who is fairly cheap. We had a lot of success with Adebayor and Ben Arfa. More recently Papiss Cisse of Newcastle in Fifa 12 and will update this page when we find some more for Fifa 13. Use your search parameters to make sure only cards of one player are showing up. So, for example….
For Adebayor we search for Premier League, Spurs and Togo nationality. Scroll through maybe 20-30 versions of the same player card so you can get an idea of its market value and what people are bidding on them. If you see a few people placing bids of say 1,000 coins then you want to be scrolling through and placing bids on any versions of Adebayor which are under 800. You’ll be surprised how many you can find. If you have the time then adding these players to your watch list and waiting until 15 seconds of the auction remain then this is the best way. The online web-app is brilliant for this. (We trade while the Mrs is watching soaps!!)
Good players we have found this season have been Hernandez and Azpilicueta from the BPL.
Your best bet is to ignore shiny gold (rare) or black cards (in-form players) to begin with, as these usually go for thousands or even tens of thousands of coins. The IF player cards can reach 100,000 – 5,000,000 which is a long way off for a beginner.
How to make coins quickly and easily
Like any marketplace in the world, you can make the most coins on FUT by buying low and selling high.
Some users can look for a quick sale so will place a player you know sells for more up for sale for a lower price. If this happens, buy the player, even if you already have one in your squad. Simply place him straight into your trade pile and make a tidy profit.
In the very beginning, playing games will help you build your squad. If you play 4 games and do reasonably well in those games, you could lose all 4, you’ll still make around 2,000 coins for your efforts.
The temptation can be to spend some of your real cash on the game. To start with I found myself saying, ‘what is 89 pence?’ or however much the packs were at the time. This can soon add up though and in Fifa 12 I haven’t spent a single penny and have Aguero, Tevez, Vidic, Ribery, Modric as well as many other top players.
You can also log in to the FIFA Ultimate Team web app on your PC or Laptop and keep track of your auction bids and update your squad. This is crucial if you’re going to be trading. We do a lot of our bidding on the web app. My advice is to wait until 15 seconds remains, place the next highest bid. You will rarely get players watching their bids so this is the best method we have found and stops you having to use the buy it now prices. EA Sports introduced the app for Iphone and Android devices so this is also a useful tool for trading on the go.
When selling cards, it is vitally important that you check what each one is selling for on the market before you set your price. Prices can swing within days, so check again regularly if your card isn’t selling. If you use our method above then you’ll have a fair few cards of the same player. Don’t place these at the same price as people may tend to just skip past your players if they see 7 players all at the same price. That’s what I tend to do…unless they are a bargain price!
It is common sense that players with higher ratings will sell for more. You will find that in some cases though players who have strong stats such as pace, shooting, defending etc will have a higher value. A lot of people rely on pace so if you have a player who has 90+ for pace then they will usually sell for more. Don’t forget the skills too. If the player you’re selling has 5* skill moves then they will be high in demand so bump up their price.
Sometimes you’re better off discarding low-value cards and getting around 20 to 300 coins from EA, rather than putting them on the auction house every hour. Putting cards on one-hour auctions will mean you have a higher chance to get a quick sale. If you place players who can you can discard for between 300-350 coins on the market at starting price of 150 then sometimes you’ll only get 200 or 250 for the player so you’re doing yourself out of 100 coins and wasting time putting them on auction.
Finally, if you should be so lucky or have worked hard enough to have rare players such Messi or Ronaldo place these on the auction for longer periods of time. This will give people chance to see your auction and hopefully attract a high bidder.
OUR BEST TRADING TIP
This is by far the most useful tip we can offer you to make coins. The best example I can give you is from last year on Fifa 12. Ben Arfa scored a sublime solo effort for Newcastle United in a game. I had 6 or 7 versions of Ben Arfa which usually sold for under 1,000 coins. I waited 24 hours (to give people time to see the goal) and then placed the cards I had bought for between 400-750 and then placed them all up at 1,900 start price to 2,500 buy now price. They all sold for over 2,000 meaning I was making at least 1,500 on each card. Ben Arfa had been in great form for Newcastle and these sort of scoring runs and special goals can affect the market. We did the same for Papiss Cisse, also of Newcastle United. He had been on fire since he joined them in the January transfer window and has scored lots of goals. This increases the interest in him especially with the Newcastle fans and they will pay over the odds to get him.
Hernandez of Man Utd has been on fire this season so this has seen his popularity rise on Fifa 13. Keep an eye out for in form players in real life. Michu of Swansea is another fine example.
Finally, if you know a player is going to be transferred to a team then try pick up cheap versions of the card before the move. Then when they have made the move supporters of the club he joined will want to pick him up, therefore you bump up the price and make a tidy profit.
Using these tips will see you making more coins in ultimate team. We have made 100,000’s by using the methods above, especially the best trading tip.
How to win games online
If you have assembled a really strong squad with top chemistry levels but are still struggling to pick up wins then please read our other Fifa 13 guides and tips to improve your game and get the most from your FUT squad.
Have reserve squads and players ready
We’d suggest that having a strong squad of around 20 players is essential. Not only will this keep your squad fresh and fighting fit it will also allow you to have a play around with different starting 11’s and keep the game enjoyable. If you played with the same 11 every game then you’d pick up injuries, have to spend lots of fitness and morale boosting cards. By resting a player or rotating your squad you won’t have to spend money on fitness boosting cards which, leaves you more to spend on the players you are chasing in the market.
You’ll need to win games or use morale-boosting cards to keep your team’s form up, which affects how well they play during games. If you aren’t winning many games then morale can drop fairly quickly. This is when morale boosting cards can come in very handy.
Players use one contract point for every game they appear in, even if it’s just from the bench for the last 5 minutes so try not to make any late changes during the game if you can. If a player’s contract expires, don’t worry, you’ll still keep him. You’ll just need to obtain a contract card to use him in a match again. Contract cards can be picked up in packs or from the auction house and usually you can get lengthy contracts for a small amount of money. Try to have a bank of 3 or 4 contract cards at all times at least so you can quickly use them if needed. Give players who you know you’re not going to sell lengthy contracts and that is one less hassle to worry about.
Finally, you can boost an individual player’s shooting, or heading, or other area, with specific cards. These can be crucial if you’re in a final of an online tournament. Recently we won 5,000 coins from a tournament and used 5 different attribute boosting cards for the final game. Most of the teams you’ll come up against will use these cards in the final. If you get them in packs (which is the only place we have obtained them from) don’t quick sell them, keep them in your consumables pile in case you need to use them in a final for example.
That covers our guide to Fifa 13 ultimate team. Use these tips to help you succeed, win more matches and make more coins to build your dream squad.
